BIAM – Academic Observation of Student Development
This form of observation is a system designed to measure students' understanding and mastery of academic subjects. The BIAM process is conducted twice a year (in January and June) for students in grades II–VIII. The BIQ (Subject Knowledge Evaluation) exams are administered by the Academic Monitoring Department (BIMM) based on tasks developed under the supervision of subject department heads.
Additionally, KIQ (In-Class Knowledge Evaluation) exams are held twice a year, in November and April, by each subject teacher before the announced deadline. Teachers are required to prepare and submit the results to BIMM immediately after the exams. These results are entered into the system, ranking tables are created, and top-performing students are announced and awarded.
Students with unsatisfactory results are enrolled in additional support programs organized by their teachers. All assessments are conducted based on the Ministry of Education’s standards, and an integrated evaluation exam is also included alongside individual subject exams.
Instructions for the Implementation of BIAM at Hədəf STEAM Lyceum
Dear pedagogical team,
The BIAM procedures for grades 2 to 9 have been approved by the school administration and will be conducted as follows to evaluate the academic levels of our students:
-
Questions must be prepared in three difficulty levels:
-
5 easy
-
4 medium
-
1 medium-hard
Every test must include intra-subject integration (at least 4 questions) and interdisciplinary integration (at least 1 question).
Note: Sample interdisciplinary questions are provided below.
The same questions must be used for both Azerbaijani and Russian sections (except language subjects).
Only black-and-white printing is available—no color-dependent visual questions allowed. -
-
Each question is worth 10 points, totaling 100 points per test.
-
Department heads are responsible for the quality and structure of test development. Teachers should not prepare individual tests for their own classes. Test questions are collected, structured by the head of department, and submitted to BIMM by the specified deadline with correct answers included.
-
Files should be named with the department name and exam type (e.g., KIQ-1, BIQ-1), submitted in .rar format, and must cover topics taught up to the submission date.
-
Questions must be the same across all branches.
-
Any unauthorized sharing of questions with students prior to the exam will result in financial penalties and official warnings for the responsible teacher.
-
-
Subjects per grade to be assessed are as follows:

BIAM results are based on MQT (Subject Qualification Exam) and UQT (Final Qualification Exam) outcomes.
Special Note for English Department:
Under the guidance of the English Department Head, HELT (Hədəf English Language Test) for Speaking and Listening is held twice a year. In addition, for subjects taught in English, 10 test questions must be developed and submitted to BIMM. The final score is calculated as an average of the HELT and BIQ exams, evaluated on a 100-point scale.
Note: The HELT guidelines are provided in an appendix.
-
The BIMM Department is responsible for organizing and overseeing all exams and test development.
-
All exams are conducted in-person (traditional format).
-
Exams are held for all subjects on the same day:
-
Primary grades: 120 minutes
-
Grades V–VIII: 180 minutes
-
-
No exams will be held for Technology, Physical Education, Art, and Music. Final semester grades (out of 100) will be assigned by teachers based on performance and diagnostic assessments.
-
No grades will be given for Gymnastics, Drama, Chess, or Logic.
-
Exam results are presented to parents in a specially designed report format (Annex 1 included in the guidelines).
-
Once results are determined, student performance is digitized. Individual progress by subject and exam is tracked, helping identify students falling behind, as well as overall trends across classes and subjects. Action is taken accordingly.
-
Ranking tables are generated for both students and teachers.
-
The top 3 students from each exam receive certificates and awards in a school ceremony.
-
The top 3 students with the highest annual scores receive the "Student of the Year" award.
-
Teacher rankings are reviewed at the Pedagogical Council meeting.
-
The average mastery percentage per subject is also used in PKPD (Pedagogical Staff Performance Evaluation).
-
-
For semester results:
-
The first semester score is based on BIQ-1,
-
The second semester score is based on BIQ-2,
-
The annual score is the average of both semesters, always calculated in favor of the student.
