Certification: Why are practical subjects evaluated through theoretical exams?
Subject: Certification for practical subjects: Theory vs. Practice
This year, teachers of History, Physical Education, Music, Technology, and Fine Arts will be involved in the certification process for the first time.
It should be noted that, with the exception of History, these subjects are primarily practical. Nevertheless, the certification exam will be held in an electronic format and will assess theoretical knowledge rather than practical skills.
At this point, a question arises: should teachers of practical subjects take the exam in the same format as others? Is there a need for any changes in this area?
Dr. Shamil Sadiq, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, shared his views on the subject with AzEdu.az.
Our interviewee stated that checking theoretical knowledge in the first stage of certification is a correct approach:
"First of all, let me mention that evaluating practical subjects solely based on theoretical knowledge is not an ideal approach. However, as someone involved in the process, I believe that testing theoretical knowledge in the first stage of certification is necessary to some extent.
Because when the number of participants is high, measuring and evaluating practical skills based on objective criteria is a quite difficult and arduous process. The electronic exam format serves better to ensure objectivity at this stage."
A person who bears the title of "Teacher" should not be satisfied with practical skills alone:
"Sometimes a music teacher thinks that playing the piano well is enough to be a teacher, or a fine arts teacher believes that being a good artist automatically means being a good teacher. However, teaching is not just a demonstration of skill; it is a pedagogical process. In this process, literacy, correct speech, methodical approach, individual communication skills with students, and a broad outlook play a decisive role.
From this point of view, I consider it correct to check theoretical knowledge in the first stage of certification. However, I believe that in the near future, the professionalism of practical subject teachers will be evaluated not only by exam results but also through their annual activities, their work, the results achieved, and project-based performance."
